24°-40° Beam Angles

Project Overview

The Snowberry project in Squamish was one of our most exciting and technically challenging designs to date. This property featured a modern home with large windows and a striking granite retaining wall—a material that is iconic to the Squamish area. The goal was to highlight these natural and architectural features while ensuring comfort, safety, and seamless integration with the home's sleek design.

Project Considerations

The property included a manicured lawn, expansive backyard, and a series of layered granite walls. With such a modern home, glare control was a top priority, especially given the large windows. We selected premium fixtures with individual dimming controls and high CRI ratings, ensuring precise light output and color accuracy that would complement both the natural rock and the home's architecture.

Retaining Wall & Rock Feature Lighting

Along the granite retaining wall, we installed in-ground well lights with a 40° beam spread to accentuate the texture of the stone. For the central boulder—the focal point of the wall—we switched to a tighter 24° beam angle to frame the rock with crisp contrast. Instead of using ground lighting directly on the boulder, we created a dramatic effect by downlighting it from the roof, using a powerful specialty fixture. We chose to change the colour tempature used along the retaining wall from 2700 kelvi to 3000 kelvin for the large boulder as we wanted it to stand out as the featured item it is. We then mounted five additional fixtures on the roof. Since we did not want to penetrate the home's envelope, our team custom-fabricated mounts that allowed the lights to overhang without compromising the structure. These roof-mounted fixtures provided layered illumination for the rock features, sitting areas, and fire pit zone.

Tree & Garden Accents

A red Japanese maple became a centerpiece of the backyard. To showcase it, we installed three in-ground well lights with high CRI ratings to bring out the rich reds and textures of the foliage—creating a breathtaking focal point visible from the living room. Partway through the project, the homeowners introduced four custom garden planters with a rusted patina finish. We highlighted these with micro linear lights that cast a unique "U-shaped" glow across the surface, drawing attention to their artistic character. We also pre-wired for future planting growth, allowing additional lighting to be added inside the planters as vegetation matures. The finished design was a soft, layered, and subtle lighting scene that transformed the backyard into a welcoming, modern retreat. By blending architectural lighting, glare-free safety solutions, and dramatic focal points, this project not only elevated the property's beauty but also created a backyard iconic to Squamish's natural character.
