Wellington Avenue – Horseshoe Bay Lighting Project

Project Overview
At Wellington Avenue in Horseshoe Bay/West Vancouver, we transformed a unique corner lot with mature trees, shrubs, and a cozy outdoor living area into a beautifully illuminated space. While the home itself was modest in size, the property had incredible natural features that made it a perfect candidate for a custom landscape lighting design.Corner Lot

01
Design Challenges and Approach
One of the main challenges was illuminating the built-in barbeque, patio, and deck area. The existing structure had outdated wiring that required a complete rework. Our team carefully rewired the space, concealing all cables and fixtures to highlight the lighting effect rather than the source. Additionally, the property had significant overgrowth, which required creative installation techniques to run conduits and cables seamlessly.
At Borealis Landscape Lighting, we place all of our cables in conduit on every project. This ensures longevity, durability, and peace of mind, allowing us to back our systems with industry-leading warranties.

02
Tree and Canopy Illumination
The property featured a stunning green Japanese maple, which we illuminated with a PAR 36 bulb featuring a 120° beam spread to capture the full beauty of its trunk and canopy. To highlight the portion of the canopy that stretched over the lawn, we installed an in-ground well light. These lights sit flush with the ground, avoiding interference with lawn care while providing dramatic upward illumination.
We applied the same technique to a larger red maple whose canopy extended into the lawn. For the towering cedar trees on the property, we used precision-placed bullet lights for uplighting and mounted downlights within the branches. This combination created a natural moonlight effect, casting subtle, dappled light across the patio and barbeque area.
Smaller umbrella-shaped Japanese maples were brought to life with wide-angle PAR 36 lights. Using a high CRI (Color Rendering Index), these fixtures revealed the rich textures and vibrant colors of the foliage, giving the garden depth and dimension at night.

03
Outdoor Living Area Lighting
For the barbeque and sitting area, we layered our approach. Moonlighting from the trees above created an inviting ambiance while improving visibility and safety. To enhance the view from the homeowner's kitchen window, we integrated micro fixtures above the barbeque, discreetly tucked behind a natural timber beam. This created a linear wash of light across the countertop without any visible fixtures or wiring—just a clean, seamless glow.
The result was a subtle yet dramatic outdoor lighting scene that allows the homeowners to entertain comfortably as the evenings grow darker. From the illuminated canopies of mature trees to the functional elegance of the barbeque area, the project showcases how thoughtful design and expert installation can completely transform a property.
Whether viewed from the kitchen window or enjoyed outdoors on the patio, this lighting design balances aesthetics, functionality, and safety—making Wellington Avenue a shining example of what landscape lighting in West Vancouver can achieve.
