Westway Landscape Lighting Project – Squamish, BC

Iconic Squamish Setting
The Westway landscape lighting project in Squamish was truly iconic, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Stawamus Chief, one of the community's most recognizable landmarks. The homeowner's property featured several unique elements they wanted illuminated, including a custom pond and waterfall and a green Japanese maple planted when they first purchased the home. The tree now gracefully overhangs the waterfall and serves as a focal point in the backyard.17

Let's create your perfect outdoor lighting design together.
01
Design Challenges & Solutions
One of the main challenges was the broad canopy of the Japanese maple combined with the sloped waterfall beneath it. Standard uplighting would have lost its effect due to the angle of the rocks. To overcome this, we:
Installed a custom riser to elevate the fixture above the waterfall's threshold.
Used a 100° wide beam spread to capture the full canopy.
Concealed the fixture just behind the waterfall's edge to maintain a natural look.
Although budget prevented internal underwater lighting for the waterfall, we achieved a dramatic effect by using a narrow beam fixture aimed precisely at the cascading water. The result was a shimmering, glistening waterfall effect as the light reflected off the flowing surface.

02
Phase One – Perimeter & Feature Lighting
This project was the first phase of a two-part plan. For Phase One, the priority was perimeter illumination and highlighting key landscape features. We strategically placed three downlights to create a moonlighting effect that washed softly across the lawn, achieving broader coverage and value for the homeowner. By carefully selecting beam angles and lumen outputs, we maximized reach while minimizing the number of fixtures.
In total, just 17 fixtures were used to transform this large backyard into a functional and inviting nighttime retreat.

03
Fixture Selection & Durability
Given Squamish's coastal environment—characterized by frequent rain and exposure to salt air—we chose solid brass fixtures with a lifetime warranty. These fixtures withstand harsh conditions while maintaining their finish and performance over time.
For color temperature, we balanced between 2700K and 3000K:
2700K warm tones highlighted the natural warmth of rocks and tree trunks.
3000K brighter tones made the greens of the Japanese maple and surrounding foliage more vibrant.

The Result – Beauty, Functionality & Entertainment
The Westway project was designed with lifestyle in mind. The homeowners love to entertain, and their new lighting system highlights focal points while creating a subtle, warm, and inviting atmosphere. With carefully selected fixtures and professional design, we transformed their backyard into a space that is not only beautiful at night but also safe and functional for gatherings.
This project demonstrates how professional landscape lighting in Squamish can bring out the best in natural features—from waterfalls to signature trees—while offering long-term durability and timeless design.
